About the museum
At the end of the eighteenth century, Hodslavice, on the border of Kravařsko and Wallachia (Valašsko), was a place where national and cultural influences met. The Beskydy landscape and the nearby German villages of Kravařsko shaped the historian František Palacký's view of Czech and Moravian history, which rested on the coexistence of the Slavic and Germanic elements.
Palacký's father, Jiří, worked in Hodslavice as an Evangelical teacher and at the same time as municipal clerk, timber merchant and carter. He farmed the cottage homestead, where he also taught until 1820. The Evangelical school in the village was financed essentially by the local community. František Palacký was born in the house in 1798.
Today the house is run by the Muzeum Novojičínska as a separate branch. The exhibition in the homestead, which is unique, presents the village school, the living room and the room where Palacký was born, and captures the agrarian microcosm of Hodslavice in the early nineteenth century. The museum's website also offers texts about the pastors and teachers and about the Palacký family.
