About the museum

The Šipka Museum is located in Štramberk in house no. 456 in Zauličí Street, which is first documented in writing in 1614. In 1822 the house was bought by the butchers' guild, which converted it into a brick municipal slaughterhouse and meat shops with six stalls; stucco reliefs with the date 1822 on the gable date from that time. The building is a cultural monument and lies within the urban conservation area. It formerly housed the town museum, from 1992 an exhibition of the Zdeněk Burian Museum, and from 2011 the town gallery. Today the museum is a branch of the Nový Jičín Museum (Muzeum Novojičínska), a contributory organisation.

Štramberk became famous for its archaeological and palaeontological finds. The best known is the discovery of the jaw of a Neanderthal child in the Šipka cave, a natural karst formation on the north side of Kotouč hill. In addition, quarrying limestone uncovered a number of fossils from the Jurassic period. The exhibition links these finds, from the Mesozoic sea to the Bronze Age treasures.

The geological-archaeological exhibition offers a view of the community of a coral reef from the end of the Jurassic and the beginning of the Cretaceous, roughly 150 to 145 million years ago. The archaeological part allows an illusionistic walk through the Šipka cave and introduces the most important artefacts, among them a copy of the Neanderthal jaw. On the ground floor there is a scale model of the cave; upstairs are spaces for lectures, educational activities and panel exhibitions.
