About the museum

The exhibition on Vincenz Priessnitz is housed in a building in Gräfenberg, today Lázně Jeseník. Priessnitz had it built in 1822 on the site of his birth house and used it for healing purposes. This created the first hydrotherapy institute in the world.

The museum exhibition was set up in 1999 for the 200th anniversary of Priessnitz's birth, which was included among the significant cultural jubilees of UNESCO. It aims to bring the personality of the self-taught healer and his legacy closer to today's visitors, and to show the development of the spa and of hydrotherapy after his death up to the present.

On display are period documents and faithful copies, including the record of his birth and baptism, Priessnitz's travel passport and part of a manuscript. Also shown are family jewellery, paintings from the museum's collection, hydrotherapy literature, a model of a 19th-century spa scene and a life-size figure of Priessnitz. The museum is preparing a new interactive exhibition and an extension to the second floor of the building.
