About the museum

The Municipal Museum in Protivín was ceremonially opened in 1932 on the first floor of the former municipal school on the square in Protivín. From 1981 it was administered by the then District Museum in Písek; today it is a branch of the Prácheň Museum in Písek. It is still housed in the same building.

Between 2000 and 2008 the traditional exhibition was expanded with the specialist exhibition Exotická příroda (Exotic Nature), created by the South Bohemian traveller and naturalist Karel Pecl. Visitors pass through a rainforest, a savanna, a desert and even the depths of the sea, and in dioramas discover typical inhabitants of these environments.

The current historical exhibitions have been open since summer 2012. They focus on the history of Protivín as a centre of the region, on brewing, the railway, the presence of the Schwarzenberg family, important personalities and everyday life in the town and its surroundings. The exhibitions won third place in the Gloria Musealis 2013 competition. A newly reconstructed hall for short-term exhibitions is also available.
