About the museum
Abertamy developed after the discovery of rich silver ores in 1525–1529, and in the 16th century mining took place at more than eighty mines. After a period of decline, mining returned in the 18th century with cobalt ore and after the Second World War with uranium. The last underground works ended in 1964, and the mines were closed the following year.
The town's second pillar was glove-making. Leather gloves began to be made here from 1850 by the native Johann Franz Adalbert Eberhart, and over the following decades Abertamy became an important centre of this craft. In the interwar period about thirty-five glove factories operated here, producing several million pairs of gloves a year; the largest firm belonged to the Zenker family. After nationalisation in 1946 the businesses were merged, and industrial glove production in Abertamy ended in 1998.
The Abertamy Town Museum commemorates this heritage in newly built premises opposite the church. The glove-making exhibition contains about 300 exhibits, including machines, tools, leather and patterns. The multimedia part “Stroj času” takes visitors through the era of silver, tin and uranium, and a separate mining exhibition shows minerals coming mainly from the Jáchymov region. The town's information centre is also housed in the building.
