About the museum
The Centre of Traditional Technologies Příbor, abbreviated CETRAT, is a branch of the Muzeum Novojičínska. It is an experimental workplace that researches and reconstructs traditional, often long-vanished production methods for processing natural and waste materials. It presents the results of its research in exhibitions, thematic programmes and publications. It is located in Příbor on Lidická ulice.
The permanent exhibition The Vanished World of Handicraft Production deals with traditional technologies for processing natural materials. In four halls it shows a range of distinctive techniques from traditional folk environments. The first hall is devoted to Příbor slippers made by the old technique of knitting on a form. The second hall presents historical ways of obtaining threads for textile production, including a shirt made of nettles. The third hall shows a variety of natural materials that people once used, for example a hat made of tinder fungus, a vessel made from a tree stump, baskets made of roots and grass, a cap made of pine-needle fibres, or lace made of hair, straw and horsehair.
The exhibition ends with an interactive experimentarium, where visitors can try out many handicraft techniques themselves under the guidance of an instructor. According to the operator, the exhibition is still being completed and is accessible only with a guide. The centre also organises exhibitions, seminars, workshops and educational programmes for schools.
