About the museum

The history of the Zruč estate probably goes back to the early High Middle Ages; the first written mention dates from 1328. The castle stood on the edge of a rock above the right bank of the Sázava and was protected by an artificial moat; its first owner and builder was Heřman of Zruč. From 1334 the estate belonged for more than 200 years to the Kolowrat family, and from 1553 to Jiří Kalenic of Kalenice. Under the Kalenic family Zruč became a small town, and the town took over their coat of arms.

In 1781 the whole castle burned down, and the Renaissance decoration, furnishings and archive were lost. The fundamental rebuilding was carried out by the Schebek family: in 1885 the railway builder Jan Schebek bought the large estate, and his son Adolf had the castle rebuilt in the pseudo-Gothic style in 1892–1894 to a design by the architect Jan Vejrych. After 1989 the castle was returned to the Schebek descendants, and in 2003 the town of Zruč nad Sázavou bought it. Three stages of reconstruction took place in 2006–2015.

Today the castle is the seat of the town hall and the castle gallery, and the southern wing is open to visitors in two tour circuits. In the moat runs an entertaining educational trail of Knight Milota of Kolowrat; in the former granary there is an interactive exhibition, The Story of the Sázava River; in the Zruč Court there is the Boating Museum; and in the medieval Kolowrat Tower there is a viewpoint with interactive features for children. The offer also includes the World of Bricks and Dolls and the museum From Verpánek to Baťa.
