Aalborg Forsvars- og Garnisonsmuseum
Military history museum in a World War II hangar in Aalborg – with fighter jets, tanks, and Cold War exhibitions.
About the museum
The museum is located in western Aalborg on the grounds of the former Aalborg seaplane base, a water airfield that the German Wehrmacht built during the occupation in World War II. Its centerpiece is a large hangar from that period. The museum opened on June 22, 2002; it is run by an independent institution.
Since then, the exhibitions have grown steadily. In 2009, a second exhibition hall was added, and the uncovered command bunker of the seaplane base was incorporated into the tour. It deals with the three German airfields in Aalborg and the camps for German refugees after the end of the war. In total, the museum grounds cover around 15,000 square meters, about 5,000 of them roofed.
The collection covers all parts of Danish total defense – army, air force, Home Guard, police, and rescue services (formerly civil defense). Many exhibits, especially heavy vehicles and fighter aircraft, come from the authorities themselves. The main focuses are the occupation period 1940–1945, the Cold War 1945–1991, and Aalborg as an important garrison city. Many vehicles and weapons can be viewed up close.
