Stubbekøbing Museum
Volunteer-run local museum in a merchant's house from 1846 with everyday life around 1900, a scale collection and Denmark's knitting museum.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1992, when the museum friends' association bought the listed house in Vestergade and the museum became an independent institution. The foundation was formed by collections handed over by the former municipality of Stubbekøbing: scales and measures from the period 1588 to 1947, tools from crafts and agriculture, and enameled kitchenware.
The late neoclassical building was constructed in 1846, the side wings were added in 1873, and it was placed under heritage protection in 1954. Over time it housed, among others, a master mason, a merchant, a grain dealer and a newspaper editorial office. From 2016 to 2018 the house was comprehensively restored.
On the ground floor the museum shows how people lived in town and country around 1900 – with a furnished living room, a schoolroom and craftsmen's workshops –, complemented by changing exhibitions. In 2020 "STRIK på 1'ste" was added on the upper floor, a museum of knitting craft with a historical collection and changing designer exhibitions. The house is run exclusively by volunteers and also serves as a tourist information office and cultural center with lectures and workshops; a historic tea pavilion from 1852 is currently being rebuilt in the courtyard.
