Bunkermuseum Hanstholm

Museum in Hanstholm on the strongest German coastal fortress in Denmark – with a gun bunker, open-air grounds, and an ammunition railway.

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 110 Partially accessible

About the museum

From the fall of 1940, the German navy had a heavy coastal battery built near Hanstholm. Together with a battery near Kristiansand in Norway, it was meant to block the Skagerrak; the four 38 cm guns had a range of about 55 kilometers. The fishing village of about 800 inhabitants became the strongest German fortress in Denmark, and the residents were eventually forced to leave their homes.

The museum was established in 1979 in the area of the former Hanstholm II battery. The centerpiece is gun bunker no. 3 with about 2,500 square meters: crew quarters, engine room, and ammunition rooms have been restored in part with original equipment, and in the 30-meter-wide gun pit the base of the turret still stands. The modern exhibition building was inaugurated in 2002 by Queen Margrethe II.

Around the bunker extends an open-air site of about 22 hectares with further bunkers, guns, and a 38 cm gun barrel that lay until 2005 in the courtyard of the Tøjhusmuseet in København. Part of the once roughly 4.3-kilometer-long ammunition railway is in operation again: the museum train runs through an ammunition bunker and a gun bunker. The operator today is Museum Thy.
