Vorupør Museum
Small museum in a boatbuilder's house and workshop in Nørre Vorupør about coastal fishing, boatbuilding, and everyday life on Thy's North Sea coast.
About the museum
Vorupør Museum is part of Museum Thy, the state-recognized museum of Thisted Municipality, and opened in 2000. It is housed in the former boatbuilding yard opposite the church in Nørre Vorupør, where cutters were once built for coastal fishermen. In 1919, the boatbuilder Jens Kr. Andersen developed the large type of coastal boat here, which was subsequently used by fishermen along the west coast.
The residence, workshop, and yard are largely preserved in their original condition. Many of the old machines have been restored and run at certain times, so visitors can see how timber for the boats was sawn and worked. In the kitchen of the old house stands a wood-fired stove, where the museum has for years been working with traditional recipes.
The exhibitions tell of the time when Vorupør was an important fishing village with numerous large fishing cutters, of the hard life of the coastal population, of boatbuilding, and of the Indre Mission revival movement that shaped the region. For school classes, the house serves as a historical workshop where children experience Vorupør of the 1920s through handicrafts, cooking, and washing the old-fashioned way.
