Christiansdal Vandkraftværk
Hydroelectric power plant over 100 years old near Haderslev that still generates electricity, shown by volunteers of Tørning Mølle in summer and on guided tours.
About the museum
The Christiansdal valley east of Tørning Mølle is an early industrial site: after the Stevning Dam was impounded in 1749, a tinware factory was established here in 1772, its water wheels driven by the Tørning Å. A linen weaving mill with bleachery and fulling mill followed, as well as an oil mill, which operated until the war of 1848. From 1851, glass, mirror glass and soda were produced; in 1862 the canal from Stevning, which still survives today, was added, followed later by pulp and paper production with at times 200 to 300 employees.
After a major fire in 1907, the industrial age ended, and in 1911 a power plant was built on the site, which initially supplied around 80,000 kilowatt-hours a year – about half of Haderslev's electricity demand at the time. A second turbine, fed from the canal, raised output to around 300,000 kilowatt-hours from 1920.
The buildings belong to Naturstyrelsen. In 2017, Tørning Mølle took over the electricity generation; since then a group of around 18 volunteer retirees has operated and maintained the plant, while the mill's guides convey the 300-year history of the site.
