Rundemølle
Old watermill on Løjt Land near Aabenraa with a local history museum: captains' interiors, traditional costumes, a general store, and 50 ship models.
About the museum
Rundemølle is one of the old watermills of Sønderjylland; its history goes back to the 13th century. The mill lies in the hilly, glacially shaped terrain of Løjt Land at the end of Genner Bugt and Kalvø Vig in the northeast of Aabenraa Municipality. Over the centuries it belonged to the church and the king; in 1564 Eskel Jessen took over the operation, and his family remained millers for about 330 years. From 1894 the owners changed, and a bakery was set up in the barn.
In 1995 the shipowner Hans Michael Jebsen acquired the complex. It consists of a residential building from 1875 as well as a mill building and a barn/bakery building, which were rebuilt with Flensburg bricks and a thatched roof on the model of 1890 and completed in 1997. He then let the Løjt Lokalhistoriske Forening use the two three-story outbuildings for museum purposes.
There the association shows its own collections together with furniture and objects from the shipowner's possessions: furnishings from the captains' farms of Løjt Land, clothing from a hundred years, an old general store, agricultural implements, about 50 large ship models on the history of shipbuilding, as well as prehistoric finds and an extensive photo archive.
