About the museum

The entrepreneur Christian Panbo, whose company Christian Panbo A/S in Aabenraa designs and builds wooden houses, collected paintings of the Danish Golden Age and the Skagen painters over many years. For a long time the pictures hung in the company's offices. In 2017 he had a museum building of its own constructed on the company grounds in the industrial area, and opened it to the public on Good Friday 2018.

The white wooden building is clad on the outside with the same heartwood planks from northern Sweden that the company also uses for its vacation and residential homes; the museum therefore sees itself as a sustainable building. The works hang in cozily furnished parlors with old furniture, where visitors can also leaf through books.

The core of the collection is paintings by C. W. Eckersberg – according to the Grænseforeningen, 32 pictures and thus the largest Eckersberg collection outside Copenhagen. The subjects range from portraits and ship paintings to views of Rome. A second parlor is dedicated to the Skagen painters Michael, Anna, and Helga Ancher and P. S. Krøyer. In the museum café hang works by the Christiansfeld painter Jeppe Madsen-Ohlsen, whose pictures are shaped by the life of the Moravian Brethren (Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine). A handwritten play by H. C. Andersen is also on display. Christian Panbo often staffs the museum himself.
