Drachmanns Hus
Home and studio of the poet and marine painter Holger Drachmann in Skagen with original furnishings, an art collection, and a wild garden.
About the museum
The whitewashed house on the edge of Skagen was built in 1828 as a teacher's residence. Holger Drachmann, writer, journalist, and marine painter, had already fallen in love with the rugged landscape and fishing community of Skagen in the 1870s. After many years of roaming, he bought the house in 1902, named it "Pax" (Latin for peace), and lived here with his third wife Soffi until his death in 1908.
In the same year as the purchase, a large studio with a striking window was built to drawings by P.S. Krøyer; Marie Krøyer helped with the furnishing. In 1910, the widow sold the house to a committee, which opened it as a museum in June 1911. Since then, the furniture, desk, travel souvenirs, and Drachmann's art collection, with works by fellow Skagen painters and his own pictures, have been largely preserved as he left them.
Since the merger with Skagens Museum, Drachmanns Hus has been one of its three visitor sites. The museum has also since awarded the Drachmannlegat, a literary prize in existence since 1917, which is usually presented on Drachmann's birthday, October 9. The garden around the house is the most natural of the museum's three historic gardens.
