About the museum

Maskinrummet goes back to the private collection of the fisherman and entrepreneur Henning Kjeldsen, who gathered ship, agricultural and industrial engines over decades. In 2020 he opened an engine and machinery museum with it in a smaller hall on Jollevej in Skagen, run by employees and volunteers.

For the steadily growing collection, Kjeldsen had a large new building made up of two structures with striking glass arches built at Skagen's harbor. The old house on Jollevej closed in November 2025; on June 27, 2026 the new Oplevelsescenter Maskinrummet opened on Auktionsvej with over 10,000 square meters on several floors.

The engine exhibition shows machines from many manufacturers and countries, including a 70-ton Krupp diesel generator from 1926; several engines are started up every day. The vehicle collection comprises over 100 classic cars – including 117 vehicles taken over from the former Jysk Automobilmuseum in Gjern – as well as hundreds of motorcycles and mopeds.

The offering is rounded out by a maritime exhibition with ship models and diving helmets, a large fashion and luxury brands department, a play area for children and several restaurants. The center explicitly describes itself as a visitor attraction.
