Anchers Hus
Home of the painter family Anna, Michael, and Helga Ancher in Skagen, with original furnishings, two studios, and a family garden.
About the museum
Anna and Michael Ancher moved into the house on Markvej in Skagen in 1884 with their one-year-old daughter Helga. Unlike most members of the artists' colony, who came only seasonally, the family lived here year-round, and the house became a meeting place for the circle around P.S. Krøyer, Marie Krøyer, Laurits Tuxen, Viggo Johansen, and Oscar Björck. A party in the garden inspired Krøyer's painting "Hip Hip Hurra!"
In 1913 the house received an extension designed by Ulrik Plesner with a studio for each of the two painters: Michael's room with dark wood and heavy furniture also served as a gentleman's study, while Anna's bright, plain white studio was entirely focused on light and color.
Michael Ancher died in 1927, Anna Ancher in 1935. Their daughter Helga inherited the house and stipulated in her will that it be preserved as a museum. Three years after her death, it opened in 1967 as a museum run by a foundation; in 2014 it merged with Skagens Museum. To this day the furnishings, library, and the family's art collection, with works by friends among the artists, have been preserved. The kitchen garden behind the house was recreated in 2021 following the family's example.
