Skagen Bamsemuseum
Small teddy bear museum in Skagen-Østerby with scenes, bear art, and a children's area – visits by arrangement.
About the museum
The Skagen Bamsemuseum was inaugurated in August 1998 and is considered the first and only teddy bear museum in Scandinavia. The small house in the Østerby district includes a shop and two small exhibition floors; a garden belongs to the museum. It is run by Jonna Thygesen.
The collection is organized in small display cases, each showing a scene or story – such as a construction site with workers and a cement mixer, or H. C. Andersen's fairy tale of the emperor's new clothes, reenacted with teddy bears. On the first floor, Diana Benneweis set up a bear circus with old wind-up bears, a bear orchestra, and a miniature candy seller. Also on view are bears of famous personalities and bear art by artists such as John Bredahl, Claus Ørntoft, and Tong Wang.
The sculptor Bjørn Nørgaard, longtime chairman of the friends' association, coined the house's motto that bears think with their hearts. He created the figure "Lykkebjørn," which stands at the entrance, and the plaster figure "Stakkels bamse," which the museum acquired; in the garden stands John Bredahl's "Hjertebamse." Through the association Bamsemuseets Venner, the museum has collected donations for children with cancer for years and showed bear exhibitions every December in the children's area of ARoS in Aarhus.
