GeoCenter Møns Klint
Experience center on the chalk cliffs of Møn with an interactive journey through time over 70 million years, fossils, amber, and guided fossil hunting.
About the museum
Møns Klint has been a popular excursion destination for more than a hundred years, and the meeting point was always Store Klint near the 128-meter-high Dronningestol. In 1895 the hotelier R. B. Christensen had a pavilion built here as an excursion restaurant, and in 1969 a cafeteria extension was added for growing tourism.
An international architecture competition was held for a new building, which PLH Arkitekter won in 2002 among 291 entrants. The wing-shaped building was built directly into the cliff, only a few meters from the edge, and was opened on May 29, 2007 by Queen Margrethe, who remains its patron to this day. The center is run by a non-profit foundation whose building is debt-free thanks to donations from numerous funds and public bodies; operations are handled by a company on behalf of the foundation.
The site belongs to the state nature agency Naturstyrelsen. Under an agreement with it, the GeoCenter handles nature interpretation for the state-owned areas on Høje Møn, including the cliff, Klinteskoven, and the dry grasslands Jydelejet and Høvblege. Since 2009 it has been one of Denmark's knowledge-based educational activity centers.
The permanent exhibition leads from the marine reptiles and chalk algae of the Cretaceous period through the glaciers of the Ice Age to the island's biodiversity today. It is complemented by amber and flint exhibitions, a 3D cinema, virtual reality stations, and outdoor activities such as fossil hunting on the beach, mountain bike tours, and tree climbing.
