About the museum

The museum for the island of Møn was founded in 1914. Since 1958, it has been housed in the Empiregården in the middle of Stege, an old merchant's farmstead right next to the town gate Mølleporten. Today it is part of the Museum Sydøstdanmark group and also serves as the local archive for Møn.

The farmstead was built at the end of the 1770s as a four-winged merchant's farm that combined shop, residence, storage, and agriculture under one roof. The present main building was erected in 1813 in the Empire style by the merchant Hendrich Krænchel, which is the origin of the name. A town fire in March 1836 destroyed large parts of the farm; of the original buildings, only one half-timbered house remained partly preserved. In the early 20th century, the farm housed, among other things, a beer depot as well as the practice and home of Jensa Thøger Sørensen, one of the first practicing female physicians in Denmark. Since the 1970s, the buildings have been restored step by step.

The exhibition leads through twelve rooms with twelve stories from prehistory to today – from the medieval trading town of Stege through storm surges and Møns Klint to artists of the Golden Age and the newcomers of the 1970s. Admission also includes the Mølleporten, a late medieval town gate from the first half of the 15th century, which, after five years of restoration (2020–2025), can be visited from the inside for the first time and offers a view over the town and the sea.
