Thorsvang - Danmarks Samlermuseum
Collectors' museum in a former milk powder factory in Stege on Møn with rebuilt shops and workshops from the time when grandfather was young.
About the museum
Thorsvang goes back to the collector Henrik Hjortkær, who gathered old everyday objects all his life. For many years he looked for a place where the collection could be shown in a lively way. With the support of Møns Bank and the tourist association Møn-Sydsjælland, the foundation Fonden Danmarks Samlermuseum came into being; it took over from Vordingborg Kommune for a symbolic krone one of the last old factory buildings in the area, the former dried-milk factory in Lendemark near Stege.
Numerous volunteers took part in the conversion and furnishing; the museum opened in July 2013. In the factory hall, small shops and workshops in the style of the early 20th century were built, including a bank, locksmith, tobacco shop, tailor shop, butcher, photographer, and post office, plus an old schoolroom. A former air-raid shelter shows a short sound and image show about the war years on Møn, and historic chain carousels can also be seen.
At the entrance is the merchant's shop, which since 2021 has housed the furnishings of Herolds Varehus of Copenhagen, a store founded in 1896 whose fourth-generation owner handed it over to the museum. The museum is run and maintained by volunteers; the house also includes a café with a lunch buffet and rooms for celebrations and concerts.
