About the museum

The Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke is located on the hill west of Sønderborg where Danish troops defended the Düppel fortifications against the Prussian army in 1864, until it stormed the positions on April 18. The defeat is still regarded as a turning point in Danish history, and the center tells of the prehistory, course, and consequences of this war.

After an architectural competition with almost 200 entries, construction began in 1991; the building was financed mainly by the foundation Aage V. Jensens Fonde. On April 18, 1992, the anniversary of the battle, Queen Margrethe II inaugurated the house. The operator is the foundation Fonden Dybbøl Banke.

Between 2001 and 2007, a faithful reconstruction of a Danish redoubt with a trench, palisades, blockhouse, concrete powder magazines, and cannons was built on the grounds, as well as a replica barracks camp, the "Soldaterbyen". The first section opened in 2003; the complete site was inaugurated again by the Queen in 2007.

In addition to films about the war, the house focuses on experience: in dormitories, the writing room, smithy, and telegraph station, you can follow the soldiers' everyday life, and during the holidays, performers in historical uniforms show weapons and equipment. From September 2026 to the end of May 2027, buildings and exhibitions will be fundamentally renovated.
