Ringridermuseet
Denmark's only ring-riding museum in a gabled house of 1643 in Sønderborg – medals, lances, posters, and archive of the ring-riding festival since 1888.
About the museum
The ring-riding festival Ringriderfesten in Sønderborg has been held since 1888. Hardly any material survives from the first decades; minutes exist only from 1921 on. In the early 1990s, mementos accumulated among riders and committee members, and the main committee decided to build an archive. On March 6, 1996, an archive committee met for the first time for this purpose, collecting and organizing material in a room of the Cormall machine factory and soon presenting it like a small museum.
When space ran out, Sønderborg Kommune made the building at Kirkegade 8 available. The listed gabled house was built in 1643 by the tailor Søren Jensen; it is considered one of the oldest surviving houses in the town and was inhabited by craftsmen and sailors until 1969. After long vacancy, it was renovated starting in 1985 and housed the Local History Archive until 2004. On July 8, 2006, the Ringridermuseum opened here as the first of its kind in Denmark.
The museum belongs to the ring-riding festival Ringriderfesten i Sønderborg and is looked after by a volunteer museum committee. In several parlors it shows medals, ribbons, rings, a complete rider's uniform, heralds' horns, honorary lances, saddles, and trophies, as well as a large painting of the riders' parade by Fritz Carstensen. In the archive, newspaper clippings, photos, posters, and minutes from the festival's history can be consulted.
