About the museum

Augustiana is located at the end of Palævej in Augustenborg on the island of Als, right next to Augustenborg Palace, whose history goes back to the 17th century. The palaces in the palace district were closely tied to the ducal court; in the White Palace the art-loving Duchess Louise Augusta lived in the first half of the 19th century.

Augustiana opened in May 2009 as an exhibition venue for professional contemporary art. Since 2017 the ensemble has belonged to the Sønderborg Kommune: at that time it acquired the four buildings of the ensemble – Det Hvide Palæ, Det Røde Palæ, the Kartoffelhuset and a red stable – and has since run the art hall and park through its cultural department. Besides the exhibitions, events take place, and schools and preschools use the building for educational programs on contemporary art.

The art hall has no collection of its own but shows changing exhibitions of Danish contemporary artists several times a year. In the surrounding park, which joins the palace park toward the fjord, permanently installed works by Jørn Rønnau, Marianne Hesselbjerg, Mikkel Carl and Trine Maria Høy, among others, stand among old and rare trees.
