Hjortsvang Museum
Farm museum near Tørring with the Vroldgaard farm in 1950s style, relocated country houses, farm machinery, and a general store from 1908.
About the museum
The museum's foundation is the collection of the brothers Jens and Anders Markussen from the Vroldgaard farm in Hjortsvang. Jens took over the parental farm after his father's death in 1942 and over the following decades gathered around 1,000 everyday objects, tools, and machines. Among the most remarkable pieces are an oak chest said to have belonged to a central Jutland gang of counterfeiters in the 1770s, and four pikes that blacksmiths from Hjortsvang made during the uprising of 1848.
After Jens's death in 1964, Anders continued to show the collection to interested visitors. In 1983 he transferred the farm and holdings to the then Tørring-Uldum Kommune, on the condition that a museum be run there. Shortly afterwards the independent institution Hjortsvang Museum was founded.
Since then the grounds have grown considerably: five buildings from Tørring, Hornborg, Honum, and Hatting were moved to the museum grounds, including the Honumhuset in 1992 and the Hattinghuset from the year 1760 in 1994. A forge built in the old style was added. The residential building of Vroldgaard is furnished as it looked in the 1950s.
Today the museum records around 7,000 registered objects on rural history and culture around Tørring. Operations are largely carried by volunteers; the house also includes a local archive.
