Isbådsmuseet
Small, freely accessible museum on Halsskov Odde about the ice boats that carried mail and travelers across the Storebælt in winter until 1937.
About the museum
When the Storebælt froze over, ice boats were for centuries the only connection between Zealand and Funen. After a private boat with three people and a large sum of money was lost in 1794, the state postal service took over ice boat traffic. The crossing could take hours to days; along the way the island of Sprogø offered lodging and food. King Frederik VI also had to return home this way in 1814 after the Treaty of Kiel.
With the railway ferries between Korsør and Nyborg, branch lines to ice boat stations at Halsskov and Knudshoved were built from 1883, which could be used when the ferry harbors froze over. In the harsh winter of 1892/93, 36 boats were ready at Halsskov alone; male passengers had to help push and pull, while women and children were allowed to remain seated. More powerful icebreakers and the airplane gradually made the boats obsolete, and in 1937 ice boat service was officially discontinued.
The Isbådsmuseet was established in 2001 on Halsskov Odde and is part of the Korsør By- og Overfartsmuseum. With photographs, text panels and exhibits, it tells of the ice winters and the crews who dared the crossings. The building is looked after by volunteers but is open without supervision.
