Korsør By- og Overfartsmuseum
Volunteer-run museum in the Store Magasin of Korsør Fortress on the town's history and the ferry service across the Great Belt.
About the museum
The initiative for the museum came in 1981 from the ship's chief engineer Poul Bell, supported by employees of the ferry line across the Great Belt and other history enthusiasts from Korsør. The municipality made a former youth hostel building on the fortress grounds available, which opened as a museum on June 15, 1983, after a conversion.
Because space soon ran short due to donations – mainly from the ferry operations – the museum moved in 1997 into the Store Magasin of Korsør Fortress, a storehouse built around 1610 on the orders of King Christian IV. The exhibition is on the second floor; the cellar and attic serve as an archive, and the town uses the first floor for exhibitions and receptions.
The museum is run by a private association with membership fees, donations, and a grant from the Slagelse Kommune, and is staffed by volunteers. The display is divided into a town museum with furnished parlors of workers and townspeople, shop fittings, and a room for the poet Jens Baggesen, and a crossing museum with ship and ferry models on the history of crossing the Belt up to the fixed link. The association also runs the ice boat museum at Halsskov Rev.
