Reersø Museum
Thatched half-timbered house from the early 18th century in the village of Reersø, showing how poor fisher-farmers lived around 1800 with stable and living room under one roof.
About the museum
The Reersø Museum is one of the oldest small local history museums in West Zealand. At the suggestion of the writer Thorkild Gravlund, who came from Reersø, it opened on May 23, 1926. It is housed in a thatched half-timbered house eight bays long, made of oak and pine with clay walls, built around 1726 and now a listed building.
The nickname "Andræjs Hus" recalls the last resident, Andreas Sørensen, an artilleryman from North Zealand, who married a widow in 1812 and leased the house for an annual fee. After his death in 1841 it was no longer lived in but used as a tool shed. The Nationalmuseet surveyed the building in 1921; for the museum's opening, the facades were restored to their original appearance. In 2017/18 the house was restored with foundation and state funds, and the last interior walls and the old bread oven were rebuilt in the process.
On display is the life of the poor rural population at the beginning of the 19th century: stable, barn, and threshing floor are at one end of the house, the kitchen with open hearth and bread oven as well as the living room with a built-in stove and alcove at the other. Crooked walls, a clay floor, and low ceilings convey the cramped conditions. On special days, volunteers in historical costumes bring the house to life and cook over the open fire. The museum association also runs a tiny harbor museum at the harbor of Reersø.
