Koldkrigsmuseum Stevnsfort
Former nuclear-bomb-proof Cold War fortress on Stevns Klint with underground passages, guns, and HAWK missiles.
About the museum
The Stevnsfort was driven into the chalk rock of the Stevns Klint cliffs in less than a year in the early 1950s. About 18 meters below the surface, a network of nearly two kilometers of passages was created. From here the Danish military could monitor shipping through the Øresund, and heavy guns could have fired on enemy ships. The facility was thus an outpost of the defense of Denmark and NATO.
In the 1980s, because of changing threats – paratroopers, helicopters, and fast bombers – it was upgraded again: from 1984 to 2000, a HAWK missile battery of the Air Force stood on the site to protect København. In 2000, the fort was decommissioned.
In 2008, the facility opened as a museum. Today the Østsjællands Museer operate it under the name FORT – A Cold War Experience. On the outdoor grounds stand cannons, missiles, fighter aircraft, and radar installations; the underground passages can be seen only on guided tours. Because they run through the same rock layers that made Stevns Klint a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, Earth history and military history meet here. The museum connects the technology with the experiences of the soldiers and builds bridges to today's questions of national defense.
