About the museum

Falsterbo Museum is run by Falsterbonäsets Museiförening (the Falsterbo Peninsula Museum Association), which was formed in 1930 under the name Falsterbo Naturskydds- och fornminnesförening (Falsterbo Nature and Ancient Monuments Association). The people of Skanör and Falsterbo handed in objects, and the first collections were shown at Gulegård by Gamla torg (the Old Square). When the collections grew, the association decided to build its own museum on Sjögatan, on a plot donated by the town, and the house was ready in 1940.

In 1948 the southern wing, Sjöfartshallen (the Maritime Hall), was added for a medieval shipwreck that had been excavated on the shore below Sjögatan. The northern wing was built in 1958, and in the east older fire-fighting equipment stands in an open shed, so that the buildings form a four-winged courtyard. The association also owns Andreas Lundbergagården on Östergatan, which Ebba Brandt bequeathed in 1976.

The exhibitions tell the story of the locality from the Middle Ages to the present: the arrival of the railway in 1904, summer guests and the growth of the seaside resort, shipping, fishing, the fires in Skanör and Falsterbo, and school and everyday life in the past. The work is based on voluntary effort.
