Kunstbygningen i Vrå
Art house in Vrå with the largest collection of the painter Svend Engelund, changing exhibitions and the annual Vrå-udstillingen.
About the museum
The Kunstbygningen in Vrå arose in the circle of the artists' association Vrå-udstillingen, which the painter Svend Engelund (1908–2007) had co-founded. In 1990 Engelund gave the newly founded independent institution a large body of paintings, drawings and sketches, which forms the basis of the Engelundsamlingen.
The building was erected in 1992; it was designed by Engelund's son Nils Engelund. In 2004 it was expanded to its present size. It is located next to the Vrå Folkehøjskole, with which the house works closely.
The Engelundsamlingen is the largest collection of works by the artist in Denmark. It ranges from oil paintings of the 1930s to works from the 1990s and shows, besides landscapes, also figure paintings, portraits, still lifes and religious motifs. Through gifts, loans and purchases – for example a series of large nude drawings from 1938 – it has been steadily supplemented.
Besides the collection, which is presented in several hangings per year, the house shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Every summer the Vrå-udstillingen fills all the halls; operations are largely carried by volunteers.
