Løkken Kystfiskerimuseum
Small museum on coastal fishing and sea rescue in the old rescue station from 1936 on the beach at Løkken – free admission.
About the museum
As early as 1850, Løkken was one of the first places on the Jutland west coast to receive a lifeboat. The current rescue house in the dunes of Nordstrand is already the town's fourth; it was built in 1936 and remained in operation until 1975, when the rescue station was dissolved and the boat moved to Slettestrand. The municipality then took over the building.
Since then Løkken Museum has shown its exhibition on coastal fishing and sea rescue here. Alongside trade and tourism, fishing from the beach shaped life in Løkken, especially between 1880 and 1960. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the 7.5-ton fishing boat BENT II from 1944. Panels and display cases recall the rescue station and tell of boat types, fishing grounds, fishing methods, and the fish trade.
After storm Egon severely damaged the building in 2015, demolition was up for debate. Four local associations – the museum association, tourism association, fishing association, and the craftsmen's and citizens' association – together with Hjørring Municipality founded an independent institution to which the building was transferred in 2017. It maintains the house and also uses it for cultural events, while Løkken Museum runs the exhibition.
