Løkken Museum
Town museum in the skipper's house Johanne Grønbechs Hus in Løkken: lighter trade with Norway, history of the seaside resort, and a kitchen around 1900 – free admission.
About the museum
Løkken Museum is located in Johanne Grønbechs Hus on Nørregade, a typical skipper's house from the mid-19th century. It was built by the seaman and later lighter skipper Thomas Grønbech; it remained in the family's possession for generations. After the death of his granddaughter Johanne Grønbæk in 1975, the museum association bought the house and set it up as a museum.
The exhibition tells how Løkken in the 18th and 19th centuries lived as a landing place off the trade between Vendsyssel and southern Norway: small ships carried grain, butter, and meat across the Skagerrak and returned with timber and iron. In the 19th century, the town took on almost urban characteristics, with a tannery, an iron foundry, and a ropewalk. When the lighter trade ended around 1900 and the railway arrived, Løkken became an internationally known seaside resort.
In the first room, a model shows the conditions of the lighter trade on the open coast; the kitchen and the wash house have been restored to their state around 1900. In the garden stands an old bathing house with a small exhibition on bathing life. The museum association also operates the Kystfiskerimuseet in the rescue station and a local history archive.
