Vildmosemuseet
Cultural history museum about the Store Vildmose in Brønderslev; currently without an exhibition, reopening planned in the cultural center Fabrikken.
About the museum
The Vildmosemuseet in Brønderslev is devoted to the Store Vildmose, once one of the most inaccessible bog areas in Denmark, and to the cultivation of this landscape through drainage, peat cutting and agriculture. The museum was founded in 1984 and was long housed at the old farm Paukjærgård. In 2012 it joined the municipal museum association in Brønderslev; today, together with Dorf Møllegård near Dronninglund, it forms the state-recognized Museum for Forsyning og Bæredygtighed (MOSS).
After the museum had been without a home of its own for about two years, the operator acquired, as of January 1, 2021, with the support of the municipality and the Sparekassen Vendsyssels Fond, part of the former factory complex of Peder Nielsen on Nørregade. The factory from 1918 produced tools and machines for bog farming, so the town's history is closely tied to the Vildmose. The museum administration has been based here since then.
The building is being converted according to plans by AART Architects into the cultural center Fabrikken, in which a new Vildmosemuseum will be created. It will tell of peat cutting, the fight against livestock diseases, the cultivation of sphagnum moss and potatoes, and of the history of supply and sustainability. The opening is planned for late 2028 or early 2029; until then the house is open only for events and booked offerings.
