Landbomuseet på Birkendegaard

Volunteer-run agricultural museum in the old bull barn of Birkendegaard near Kalundborg with implements, machinery and living scenes.

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 60 Café

About the museum

Agriculture in Denmark has changed fundamentally in just a few decades: the classic farm with manual labor and old crafts has largely disappeared through mechanization. To keep the memory of it alive, volunteers began to collect old farm implements, machinery and household goods.

In 1994 they started setting up a museum in the former bull barn of the Birkendegaard estate, about six kilometers east of Kalundborg. In 1997 the Landbomuseet was officially opened. In 2004 and 2005 a comprehensive redesign followed, which also created office and meeting rooms.

The exhibition is divided into individual boxes, each devoted to one theme – such as living room, kitchen, nursery, dairy, shoemaker's and blacksmith's workshops. It mainly shows rural life from the early 20th century on. The museum is still run by volunteers and, together with a local vintage tractor club, organizes plowing days on the farm, among other events.
