Odsherreds Kunstmuseum
Art museum in Asnæs with works by the Odsherredsmalerne and landscape painting from Odsherred, housed in the villa "Hvide Hus".
About the museum
The idea for an art museum for Odsherred came from the artists themselves: from 1980, the artists of the exhibition house HUSET in Asnæs built up a permanent collection of 20th-century art from the region. In 1990 the works could be shown in the "Hvide Hus", and in 1994 the Odsherreds Kunstmuseum was founded as an independent institution.
The building in the center of Asnæs was built toward the end of World War I as the villa of the director of the local machine factory and was extended in 1940; the architect is named as Marius Pedersen, a representative of the "Bedre Byggeskik" movement. In 2007 the museum took over the buildings.
In 2004 the museum inherited the Malergården in Plejerup, the home and studio of the Swane family of painters, which has since been accessible as a second location. Since 2012 both houses have belonged to Museum Vestsjælland.
At the heart of the collection are the Odsherredsmalerne, a group of painters who settled in the hilly landscape on the Sejerøbugt in the 1930s and painted there until the 1970s in a naturalistic and socially engaged style; well-known names are Karl Bovin and Kaj Ejstrup. In addition, the museum shows landscape art from other eras and, every year, special exhibitions related to the landscape and Odsherred.
