About the museum

Tuskjær is one of the first two rescue stations established in Denmark. A boathouse was built in 1848, and the station received its first lifeboat and a rocket apparatus. The boathouse was rebuilt in 1879 and 1890, and the lifeboats were replaced in 1856, 1886, and finally in 1915. The station was originally located at Mærsk, west of today's cultural center Tuskær.

The present building on Rubyvej was constructed in 1936: a small masonry brick building with a half-hipped roof of red tiles, which still has its original shutters and paneled doors; the building is listed as a protected monument. In 1966 the lifeboat was withdrawn, after which the station continued to operate as a rocket station until it was dissolved in the 1970s.

In 1979 the residents' committee of Fjaltring-Trans was granted the right to use the decommissioned station and set up an exhibition on its history there. Today the building belongs to Lemvig Kommune; a working group of the Fjaltring-Trans Beboerforening maintains the exhibition. The station is part of the "Jernkysten" route, which tells the story of the shipwrecks and rescue stations on the northwest coast.
