Lilleskov Teglværk
Volunteer-run brickworks near Tommerup on Funen with a ring kiln, old machines, and a narrow-gauge railway to the clay pit.
About the museum
The Lilleskov brickworks near Tommerup in western Funen was established in 1905. A few years later it passed to new owners, who modernized operations step by step. The current kiln building with its ring kiln dates from 1931; the drying barns with adjustable air supply were built shortly before. In the 1960s, the next generation took over, enlarged the kiln, and later increasingly specialized in drainage pipes. Production ended in 1983.
As early as the 1970s, the Nationalmuseet had considered placing the site under protection, but the money was lacking. At the suggestion of the owners, who wanted to give up the property, local citizens founded the independent Foreningen Lilleskov Teglværk in 1985 with the aim of preserving the brickworks as a museum.
Since then, volunteers have looked after the buildings and machines, which have largely remained in the condition of the last years of operation. The association receives no public subsidies and finances itself through room rentals, a secondhand goods and furniture shop, tours, and the rental of rail draisines on the disused railway line between Tommerup and Assens. On tours, volunteers tell of daily work at the brickworks; a roughly 400-meter-long tramway leads out to one of the former clay pits. The site is also a meeting place for handicraft and painting groups as well as for concerts and parties.
