Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Museum of modern and contemporary art in Humlebæk on the Øresund with a sculpture park, the Giacometti Room and a large children's house.
About the museum
In the mid-1950s the entrepreneur and art collector Knud W. Jensen acquired a country estate in Humlebæk north of København in order to give modern art a home that it had hardly had in Danish museums until then. He took the name from the estate built in 1855: its builder, Alexander Brun, was married in succession to three women who were all named Louise. The museum opened in 1958 and attracted far more guests than expected in its very first year.
The architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert connected the old villa to the grounds above the Øresund through low glass corridors and pavilions – the tour is laid out as a covered walk through the park and is regarded as a masterpiece of Danish modernism. In several stages the West Wing and concert hall (1966–1976), the South Wing (1982), the underground East or Graphics Wing (1991) and, in 1994, the Children's House were added; from 2003 to 2006 the entire building was modernized.
After only a few years the initially Danish-oriented collection turned into an international one. Today it comprises more than 4,000 works from 1945 onward with focal points such as Alberto Giacometti, Asger Jorn, Nouveau Réalisme, American Pop Art and German painting of the 1980s. Around 50 sculptures stand permanently in the park. In addition, with temporary exhibitions, concerts, the literature festival Louisiana Literature and the video platform Louisiana Channel, Louisiana is a major cultural venue.
