About the museum

The impetus for the museum came in 1987 with a wreck find in Mariager Fjord near Stinesminde: a well-preserved merchant ship of the fluyt type from the 17th century. Hobro's local politicians wanted to raise the ship and show it in the town, but the salvage proved too expensive, and only individual parts such as the tiller were recovered. Mayor Erlann Christiansen, however, held on to the idea of cultural life at the harbor and won over sailors for a museum of Danish pleasure boats. In 1990 it was established as an independent institution under the name Museet for Danske Lystfartøjer, together with a friends' association.

In 1991 the museum bought two vacant warehouses from the 1930s, previously used by a grain merchant, with an interest-free loan from the municipality. Their renovation dragged on for years and was completed in 1995 with a great deal of volunteer work and an EU grant; the building was officially inaugurated in summer 1999. As early as 1996 the museum came under the umbrella of Sydhimmerlands Museum, and full integration followed in 2004; today it belongs to Nordjyske Museer.

Almost all objects are donations from private individuals. As early as 1992 the museum received the cruising yacht "Silvana" from Svendborg, built in 1895, which was restored in the boat hall. About 30 vessels from the flat-bottomed barge to the kayak are on display, as well as outboard motors, sailing equipment, models, radio technology, old nautical charts and a library on sailing. An exhibition also tells the history of the Hobro harbor and its dockworkers.
