Vikingemuseet Fyrkat
Viking ring fortress Fyrkat near Hobro (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with a reconstructed longhouse, a Viking farmstead of nine houses, and an exhibition in Fyrkat Møllegård.
About the museum
The ring fortress Fyrkat in the valley of the Onsild Å at the end of the Mariager Fjord was built around 980 under King Harald Bluetooth. The circular earth rampart enclosed 16 longhouses arranged in four equally sized quarters; the complex was probably used for only a few decades before it burned down. Since 2023 Fyrkat, together with four other ring fortresses, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Vikingetidens Ringborge".
After trial excavations by the Hobro Museum, the fortress was excavated on a large scale from the 1950s and the leveled rampart was restored. Next to the fortress a burial ground with around 30 burials was found, including the richly furnished grave of a woman in a wagon box, who is now interpreted as a völva (seeress). In the 1980s one of the longhouses was rebuilt in oak outside the rampart.
About a kilometer away the Viking farmstead Stormandens Gård was created: nine reconstructed residential and workshop buildings based on excavation findings from Vorbasse, showing a large farm of around 980. Today the Nordjyske Museer operate the site. In 2024 the renovated Fyrkat Møllegård at the fortress received a new exhibition on the era of Harald Bluetooth and the finds from Fyrkat.
