Sødisbakke Museum
Small museum in Mariager on the history of welfare care and the care of people with intellectual disabilities since 1940.
About the museum
Mariager has a long tradition as a place of public welfare institutions. In 1866 a forced-labor institution for beggars and vagrants was established here, which was closed in 1939. In 1940 the "Anstalten Mariager" followed in new yellow buildings by the architect C. F. Møller, at that time an institution for people then described as "feeble-minded."
From this institution, Sødisbakke developed into a modern residential and activity service of Region Nordjylland for adults with developmental disabilities. Former employees founded a museum on a volunteer basis to preserve this history.
The exhibition in the large attic of Building C shows furniture, specially developed aids, and handicrafts made by the residents. It tells of the daily life of residents and staff since 1940, of their work in agriculture and gardening, and of the changing views of humanity – including the restraint of restless residents with leather straps, which ended only in 1980.
The volunteer guides know the institution from their own professional experience and tell anecdotes, for example about Niels Nøhr, who was known in the town as "Mariager's mascot."
