About the museum

In October 1922, citizens of Mariager, mostly master craftsmen, founded a museum association, which has since collected objects from the town and the area south of Mariager Fjord. The collection grew quickly; by 1953 it was housed on Teglgade and then moved as a tenant into the old merchant's house.

The oldest part of the merchant's house dates back to the 17th century; the upper floor was added in the late 18th century, and it is the only two-story building among the old houses of the town. From 1764 to 1937 a merchant's shop was run here almost continuously. When the property was sold in 1962, the patron Léonie Sonning worked to ensure that the museum could remain in the main building; in 1971 the museum acquired the entire property.

From 2012 the house belonged to Nordjyske Museer; since 2021 it has been independent again and is run by a volunteer board and an association with about 400 members. The exhibition deliberately sees itself as a museum of the old kind: many objects may be touched.

On view are, among other things, an aurochs horn from the Stone Age, finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages, an exhibition on Mariager Monastery, workshops of the blacksmith, shoemaker and carpenter, a 1940s general store and the living rooms from Buggesgård with the "Blue Kitchen."
