Vikingemuseet Lindholm Høje
Museum at the Lindholm Høje burial ground near Aalborg with about 700 cremation graves from the Iron and Viking Ages and an interactive Viking exhibition.
About the museum
On the hill of Lindholm Høje above the Limfjord lies one of the largest known burial grounds of the late Iron Age and Viking Age. As early as the end of the 19th century, the teacher Augusta Zangenberg campaigned for the protection of the site. Between 1952 and 1958, the National Museum and the Aalborg Historiske Museum uncovered about 700 cremation graves and more than 40 inhumation graves from roughly 400 to 1000, as well as parts of a village and a freshly plowed Viking Age field.
The graves are marked with stone settings: triangles and ship shapes mark men's graves, oval and round settings women's graves. The field today lies as open landscape next to the museum.
For its 100th anniversary, Aalborg Portland donated the first museum building in 1989, designed by Lars Fich and Lars Haastrup; the museum opened in 1992. From 2002 it was expanded by about 1,000 square meters: in 2007 the Aalborg Portland Sal was added, in 2008 the workshop Ildmagerens Værksted, and in September 2008 a new permanent exhibition. Today the house belongs to Nordjyske Museer.
