About the museum
The A. Le Coq Beer Museum, or Õllemaailm (Beer World), is on the grounds of the A. Le Coq factory in Tartu. Its heart is the historic Tartu malt tower, one of the most unique industrial buildings in Europe that has survived to the present day. The museum is entered through the factory’s gift shop.
The exhibition begins with a time tunnel that takes visitors through the history of beer: beer has been brewed for more than 12,000 years. In Beer World you can see every ingredient of beer and follow the brewing process from start to finish; the exhibits describe the development of beer production from home brewing to the modern brewing industry. In the historic industrial building the focus is on malt: malt drums from 1898 illustrate the making of malt, and malts with different degrees of roasting are on display, which visitors can also taste.
The story of A. Le Coq tells of the more than 200-year path of Estonia’s oldest drinks producer. The company, founded by Albert Le Coq in 1807, reached Tartu from Prussia via London, and in 1912 it was awarded the title of official purveyor to the Imperial Russian Court. At the end of the visit a glass of beer or lemonade awaits the visitor.
