About the museum

The museum was founded in 1974 by the ETKVL Kooperatiivkool (ETKVL Cooperative School) and was located in the basement of a residential building on Köleri Street. After the school was closed at the beginning of 1993 and the building was returned to its owner, the museum's activity was interrupted. The museum was restored by 1994 and at first operated in the former hostel of the trade school, later in ETK premises on Narva Road. In the mid-1990s its activity was interrupted again, when the rooms were taken into use by a hotel. In 2003 the museum reopened in Tallinn in ETK premises at Kalda 7c; today it is located in the premises of the Coop Eesti logistics centre on Suur-Sõjamäe Street in Rae Rural Municipality.

The stands give an overview of the emergence and development of cooperative trade over more than a century. Visitors can visit a shop that looks like a store from the 1920s or 1930s. The collection includes 37 stands of text and pictures, a shop with about 400 exhibits in the style of the 1930s, more than a hundred books, anthologies and brochures, and numerous magazines, albums, photographs, chronicles, documents, product samples and trophies. The museum also presents Coop Eesti's current activities and the branches of business associated with cooperative trade, such as own production, construction, transport, catering, training and publishing.
