About the museum
The museum is in the residence of Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, built in 1793, one of Võru’s first buildings. Kreutzwald lived in Võru from 1833 to 1877 and sold the house in 1877. To preserve the writer’s memory, the Memory Preservation Society was founded in 1923 and the Kreutzwald memorial column was unveiled in 1926. The museum’s founding document is dated 10 February 1941; this makes it the oldest Estonian writer’s museum.
The exhibition has been redesigned several times: the first was prepared in 1941 by Rudolf Põldmäe and Aino Undla, the third was completed in 1961 for the 100th anniversary of the publication of Kalevipoeg, and the fourth (1989–1993) covers the interior of the residence, a literary section, the cart cellar and a folk-tale room. Later a sauna, a garden, an arbour and a theme house were added. From 1 January 2015 the museum belongs to the Museum Department of the Võru Institute, also known as the Museums of Old Võromaa.
