About the museum
The Eesti Panga muuseum presents Estonian money and its history, as well as the activity and past of the central bank. Since the history of the Bank of Estonia and that of the Estonian state are closely linked, the museum also gives an impression of the development of the state.
The museum's collection preserves the means of payment that have been in circulation in Estonia from 1918, from the beginning of the first period of independence to the present day. The collection includes an almost complete set of the means of payment used in Estonia, including Tallinna Arveldusring banknotes, tokens, the first marks and pennies, the kroons and senti after the currency reform of 1928, and the euro banknotes and coins of all euro-area countries. In addition, documents, photographs and objects from the activity of the Bank of Estonia are kept. The first items registered in the museum were the Banking Act of 1940 and the annual reports from the bank's first working years.
The exhibition consists of texts, animations, videos and various games, where you can try checking whether banknotes are genuine, forecasting economic development and managing the central bank's foreign reserves. The sense of the era is conveyed by wax figures of cultural figures depicted on the banknotes of the Estonian kroon. Money that was in circulation in Estonia and the historical Estonian gold bar from 1922 are also on display.
The museum is located on Estonia puiestee, near the Estonia Theatre and the Solaris centre, on the ground floor of the oldest building of the Bank of Estonia's complex of red-brick buildings; the building has kept its original appearance both inside and outside and is over a hundred years old.
