About the museum
The ERMi Heimtali muuseum (ERM Heimtali Museum) is located in an old parish school building completed in 1864. The school operated in the building until 1932. On 28 November 1987, the local school’s birthday, the Heimtali Koduloomuuseum (Heimtali Local History Museum) was opened in the house under the leadership of Johannes Koka, where local traditions and old objects were collected. One part of the exhibition dealt with school and cultural life, the other with farm culture and field tools.
In 1994 the building was bought by textile artist Anu Raud, who added her collection of national textiles to the existing collections and began renovating the building. In 2009 she gave the museum, together with its collections, to the Eesti Rahva Muuseum, and from 1 June 2010 the museum has borne the name ERMi Heimtali muuseum.
Today the collections include materials related to local school life, tools from the surrounding area and, by the cupboard- and chest-load, national textiles from different regions of Estonia. The museum also has a library on folk art, home culture and art. The permanent exhibition “Põlvest põlve elutarkus” (Wisdom from Generation to Generation) interweaves local school history, historical tools and a rich textile collection; temporary exhibitions focus on handicrafts, history and the solo exhibitions of artists. Visitors may examine objects up close.
