About the museum
Lubjassaare farm is the childhood home of Johann Köler (1826–1899), founder of Estonian national painting. The farmhouse dates from the late 19th century; the barn and sauna have been restored. Descendants of Köler’s brother Andres still live on the farm: after Andres the farm was run by his son Jüri, then by that Jüri’s son, also named Jüri, and now his daughter Linda lives there with her husband. The museum is run by the Johann Köleri Muuseumi Ühing.
The exhibition includes an old smoke room (rehetuba), former tools and household items, reproductions of Köler’s paintings and works by participants in art camps organised together with Vaal Galerii. The farm is a gateway to Soomaa National Park: a forest trail starts here and leads through a pine forest to the Ruunaraipe dunes.
